Four years after her fiancé Orlando Bloom made headlines for getting paparazzied while paddleboarding in the buff, Katy Perry is finally revealing the story behind how those now-legendary photos came to be.
During an interview on The Howard Stern Show on Wednesday, Perry disclosed that on their 2016 Italian vacation the actor tried to get her to go nude with him on the paddleboard, but she refused. Stern asked if she chose not to go au naturel because she knew there'd be photographers. “I mean, I would have never, like, set him up,” the singer responded, “if I had a real thought, but in the back of my mind...I am Jim Carrey in The Truman Show a little bit, so I thought maybe there would be a chance. I would say I'm a little bit more of the pragmatic in the partnership.”
She also said that she didn't think it was strange that Bloom wanted to paddleboard nude as, “Well it was Europe. Honestly, we had had a pretty chill time for a week and everywhere we looked it was like everybody was naked. It was Europe, it was Italy, and I think he wanted to fit in with the locals and it was the end of the trip.”
Perry joked that days before those photos were taken Bloom was telling her statistics about how popular his movies like Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean are on Twitter. “I was like, eye roll, eye roll, eye roll,” she said, “and then all of the sudden, he is number one trending on Twitter and I was like, ‘How?! How?’”
On that particular day, however, it was his physical rather than his acting gifts that were getting all the attention from fans. Perry—who is expecting her first child with Bloom, likely any day now—joked that those good looks are precisely “why I'm in this mess.”
