A Note From The Publisher Mardi Gras 2013 has been one of the shortest we’ve had in a long time. This means that all of our partying had to be crammed into what seemed like a few brief weeks. Some balls were actually held BEFORE Twelfth Night—just to accommodate all of the Krewes. But a short season doesn’t change anything, or stop anyone from celebrating. We just realize that we have less time to do it in. We have to buy our beads and get our dresses hemmed earlier and shop for gowns sooner (I do that all year round, anyway). Then, there’s always the chance that the band that we may want for our ball may have

already accepted another booking. Or a venue isn’t available for our ball date. Not to mention, we may miss a ball we normally attend because it could fall on the same night as another one. When the season is longer, there’s less of a chance of that happening. In most Krewes, ball themes were finalized and royal courts were selected by early summer, and designers started on costumes as soon as they could. There’s lots of juggling and extra planning to make sure everything goes according to plan. But we get it all done, and we make it work. Because we love Mardi Gras, and because we are so lucky to live in

“We are very proud of our local Mardi Gras, which brings people to Southwest Louisiana from all over the country. Mardi Gras in Southwest Louisiana is a community-wide celebration and a family affair. Over the years, it has grown remarkably into the standout festival it is today — the second largest in the state! My very best wishes to all for a safe and memorable 2013 Mardi Gras in Lake Charles and all of Southwest Louisiana.”

From the beautifully appointed Chateau du Calcasieu, Krewe des Bons Amis presented their eighth annual Mardi Gras Ball, “Mardi Gras in Black and White” on February 2. The ballroom, with its white walls and black wrought iron made a perfect backdrop for the Black and White Ball. Jimmy Bastow, founding member of the Krewe, welcomed members and guests and introduced the Master of Ceremonies for the night, Justin Morris. A fond farewell was bid to the 2012 Royalty. King Henry VII, Matt Gillespie and Queen Anne VII, Leslie Gillespie made the final walk of their reign. To commence the 2013 Royal Ball, Captain Carrie Cubbage and coCaptain Jody Fawvor were introduced to the guests and as is tradition, Captain Carrie blew the whistle denoting the beginning of the Ball. In keeping with the theme, King Henry VIII, Brad Hebert and Queen Anne VIII, Diana Hebert were presented to the members and guests to the song “Black and White” by Michael Jackson. King Henry VIII wore an ivory tailcoat tuxedo trimmed with silver and black fleur des lis. The King’s crown consisted of fleur de lis over the entire crown with accents of purple, green and gold stones. Queen Anne VIII wore an ivory

gown accented with Swarovski crystals and silver and gold fleur de lis. It was embellished with purple, green and gold stones. The Royal Couple resides in Moss Bluff and have been married for 24 years. Brad is superintendent for M & C Oilfield Services and Diana is office manager for Calcasieu Rentals. They have three children, Hope, Jennifer, Marcus and four grandchildren. Duke and Duchess of Cajun Mafia, Aaron and Suzanne May were the next to be introduced. Since they are Cajun Mafia, it didn’t take long for them to tire of being gangsters and they began to dance to the swing music of the era. Duke and Duchess of Cajun Mafia, Aaron and Suzanne May Royal Court, Mike Allen appeared in a white shirt with a pocket protector, bow tie, black “high water” pants, suspenders, tennis shoes, and a black Star Wars hat. His glasses were taped to complete his look for Weird Al’s “White and Nerdy” routine. He walked the floor working the crowd by being himself—all white and nerdy! Duke and Duchess of Voodoo were the next to be introduced. Out of the fog, we saw a female figure pushing a casket into the light. She wore a long black gown, feathered headpiece and long black and white gloves with a skull at her waist. Then, the Duchess performed a ritual. To the guests’ surprise, the Duke of Voodoo appeared from the casket in a black tattered tuxedo and black top hat trimmed in red and white stripe. Bones hung from his lapel and skeleton gloves and a voodoo staff completed the ensemble. The Duke and Duchess of Voodoo were Mike and Kristin

No, they were looking for a bride! Michelle Gaspard entered in a white corset complete with an iridescent mini skirt, fishnet hose, a veil, bouquet, garter and silver high heels. She and Bryan Hollingsworth entertained to “White Trash Wedding” by the Dixie Chicks. As they bowed to the King and Queen, “White Wedding” by Billy Idol could be heard in the background What do you do with a haunt-

ing spirit? Ask the Duke and Duchess of the Afterlife! As they sat around the table making a plan, we heard the calypso sounds of “Jump In The Line” by Harry Belafonte. The Duke was dressed for action with his black combat boots, black and white striped suit and Beetlejuice wig. The Duchess wore a black and white bias-cut, striped, one-shoulder dress with black skirt overlay. The plan seems to work as they rocked their bodies in time to scare away the spirits and share their Mardi Gras throws with the guests. Duke and Duchess of the Afterlife were David Martin and Kysha Hebert. Both are residents of Sulphur. David is an instrument tech employed by PPG Industries. Kysha is an administrative assistant employed by Vector Electric and Controls and has been the Krewe Ball decorating chairman for two years. They are both involved in CrossFit training and have a fourlegged son, Riley the Golden

Retriever. As a surprise to the King and Queen, the Dukes and Duchesses performed in the “Gangnam Style” and the guests loved it! The Royal Court was toasted with the assistance of 2012 King and Queen Matt and Leslie Gillespie. Immediately following the toast, the Royal Court danced to the Second Line and the members and guests followed. The dance began with music provided by the Kadillacs. Sound and Lighting were provided by Southern DJ Productions. Calling All Kids!

There’s a new Krewe in town, and it’s just for you! The Royal Court Jesters of Imperial Calcasieu is forming in the Lake Area. Anne Monlezun sent a letter to area Krewes recently to gauge interest—and it was overwhelming. “It will be an umbrella organization over smaller divisions that will be sponsored by Krewes and/or organizations,” she said. Krewe member children will be in that Krewe’s division. “For example, The Royal Court Jesters of Krewe de la Famille will be under the umbrella of Royal Court Jesters of Imperial Calcasieu,” she explained. But a child’s parents don’t have to be in a Krewe in order to belong. Monlezun anticipates going to local schools so children whose families aren't in Krewes will know about the opportunity. Therefore, there could be Royal Court Jesters of (insert school name here) that would fall under the umbrella. The new Krewe will be modeled after the current 12th Night Revelers. A costumed Krewe, the ages of the members have not yet been decided. There will be one king and queen and a royal court selected (not elected) from all the Jesters. They may have their own parade depending on the size of the Krewe and the interest.

“Membership in the Royal Court Jesters of Imperial Calcasieu will be a ‘no-brainer package,’” Monlezun continued. “Dues will include costume, party/ball, etc. That way, it’s kept simple. Everyone pays same thing and gets the same benefits.” The fee and other details will be decided at organizational meetings held after Mardi Gras. Watch local publications, or go to the Mardi Gras SW websites (www.swlamardigras.com ) and individual Krewe meetings for more information.

La Krewe Des Gens Extraordinaire celebrated their 2013 ball on January 5 at the Lake Charles Civic Center with the “THE GOOD, THE BADD, and THE EXTRAORDINAIRE.” Guests were taken through a Western journey of wild cowboys and cowgirls who steer their cattle into tight circles, protect their women and children, and draw their six-shooters as the enemy on painted war ponies streaks over the rise of a hill. Most of all, they partied all evening to a live band with Zydeco, swing out, line dances, and the Second Line. This Krewe of Extraordinary People, founded in 1995, has made a commitment to foster and promote this joyous celebration by participating in all Mardi Gras activities in Southwest Louisiana. Master of Ceremonies Nora Popillion started the evening with the introduction of the WashingtonMarion Magnet High School R.O.T.C. as they presented the US flag, accompanied by Ricky Armelin singing the National Anthem. The Krewe de Charlie Sioux was sanctioned by the State of Louisiana in 1977. That same year, Lake Charles and Sioux City, Iowa officially became Sister Cities in a twinning ceremony in Lake Charles. Members consist of Sioux City and Lake Charles residents. Each city has its own Krewe president and ball captain. Sioux City members come to Lake Charles for Mardi Gras and Lake Charles members travel to Sioux City the week of July Fourth and bring Mardi Gras to Siouxland in the form of a Gala featuring beautiful costumes with large, feathered backpieces that are trucked in from Lake Charles, along with a parade and a Zydeco concert. The purpose of the Krewe is to promote Mardi Gras and share cultural experiences as well as develop tourism in each city. This Mardi Gras season completes the 18th year that Krewe members have traveled back and forth between the two cities, and the 15th year of presentation of a King and Queen and Court. This year’s gala was “Charlie Sioux Roars into the Twenties.” King

Charles XIIII, Marty Pottebaum, and Queen Siouxland XIIII, Kandy Pottebaum, of Sioux City, Iowa, welcomed and shared a toast with the new King XV, Gary Billedeaux, and Queen XV, Kala Billedeaux, of the Lake Charles area. King and Queen XV were presented dressed in beautiful baby blue, silver and white costumes, reminiscent of the dress of gentlemen and “flapper-styled” dress of the 1920s era. They wowed the crowd by dancing across the stage with a Cajun flair to a medley of 20’s music. In true Charlie Sioux-style, the costumes and backpieces of the Court and Captains were based on the “not so obvious” events of the decade of the 1920s. The Captains and Court were introduced by Sioux City news/radio celebrity Bruce Miller, who dressed the part as…you guessed it, a 1920s news/radio commentator. The Sioux City Captain, Julie Peterson, was costumed as “Mae West” and did a saucy little Mae West number that got the crowd in the spirit. The Honorary 2013 Special Edition

Lake Charles Captain, Marcella Miller-Beard, was costumed as a 1920s gangster representing Chicago’s St. Valentine’s Day Massacre of Chicago of that era. Duke of Whimsy, Danny Hasha, represented some of the first movie cartoons such as “Steamboat Willie,” “Felix the Cat,” and “Betty Boop.” The Duke of Justice, Marty Pottebaum, represented the FBI and the invention of the first lie-detector test; Duke of Opulence, Richard Kleinberg, represented the first Oscars presentation; and Duke of Adventure, Gary Sterns, represented the first Trans-Atlantic flight. The Duchess of Delight, Bernice Zachary, represented a 1920s nightclub singer and the Duchess of Suffrage, Kandy Pottebaum, represented women who won the right to vote. They were followed by the Duchess of Competition, Marie Sterns, who was costumed as an Olympic ice skater and represented the first Winter Olympics; and Duchess of Prohibition, Tammy Miller-Beard, costumed as a moonshiner with a still in the woods and represented, of course, the age of prohibition. At the conclusion of the Gala, King and Queen XV, Gary and Kala Billedeaux and the Captains and Court were reintroduced. They filled the stage in splendid colorful, feathered costumes and commenced to throw beads to the delighted audience. The Krewe de Charlie Sioux Gala was held in the magnificent, fully restored Orpheum Theatre, originally built in 1927 as a large, opulent vaudeville and moving picture house… how appropriate, don’t you think?! Everyone is welcome to participate in Krewe de Charlie Sioux events. For information, please contact George Jacobson at 436-8902.

Upon entering the soundstage, guests discovered a whimsically decorated ballroom. Starting off the evening was a video introduction modeled after the classic opening montage of Saturday Night Live. This year, Illusions brought to the stage the magnificent images of a few Oscar winning movies. Illusion’s King and Queen and Royal Court paid tribute to many big screen legends and iconic images spanning the last 84-year history. The movies stir our thoughts, memories, and emotions of our past and present. As the Ball began, guests were welcomed by music to set the mood. Musical scores such as “Star Wars,” “The Sound of Music,” and “Somewhere my Love” filled the theater to delight the Royal Guests. After formal announcements and introductions by red carpet commentators Desi Devereaux and Carla Chrisco, the Krewe Crest was lowered and set the stage for the Extravaganza. The opening number for the evening’s festivities began with action on the red carpet under the hillside “Hollywood” sign. Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” filled the air as the honored guests arrived to attend the awards ceremony. Cameras flashed and the Hollywood press corps fought for position to shoot the best candid photos. The audience was given an up-close view of how changes take place on the stage with drops flying in and out, props and curtains being set, all while Forbidden Broadway’s version of “Hype” was sung to the Rent music score. The stage was now set for an evening with Oscar and the presentation of the Royal Court. King Illusions XXIII, Paul Klumpp,

and Queen Illusions XXIII, Karen Prejean both represented the grander of Hollywood and Sunset Boulevard. The King wore a regal tuxedo of royal satin. popular it has grown," said Katie Harrington, president of Mardi Gras of Southwest Louisiana and chair of the Cook-off. "We had a record number of entries this year, forcing us to have teams inside the Exhibition Hall as well as under a tent just outside the building. In addition to our local competitors, we also had several teams coming in from out of town, some from as far away as Houston." New this year, for a dollar per vote, attendees had the opportunity to help select their favorite gumbo for the People's Choice Award.

FEBRUARY 11, 2013

On February 9, a raucous group of pirates, bold swashbucklers all, made their way to the meeting place, the VFW on Country Club, to do what pirates do… wreak chaos and have a good-humored time at the Third Annual Ball of the Krewe des Pirates. The room was befitting of a pirate gathering place, complete with Jolly Roger Flags suspended from the ceiling and colorful masks depicting the blues, greens and bronze colors of the Louisiana marshes and bays where many treasures were buried. The pirates had been waiting months for this Ball and they were not disappointed. Command of the Pirate Ball was taken by Advisory Board Member and Master of Ceremonies Mike Guidry. His command to “Batten down the hatches, clear the deck and prepare to take up anchor” was heard loud and clear. A brief history of the Krewe was presented along with the board members: President-elect Charlie Blocker, Ball Chairperson Lottie Courvelle, Secretary Larry Williamson, Treasurer Donna Duhon, and Advisory Members Ricky Trahan, Johnnie Duhon, and Dean Harris. All eyes were on the 2012 Court as they made their final promenade: Duke and Duchess Tami and Charlie Blocker, Duke and Duchess Billy Doherty and Courtney LeDoux, and King Pierre II and Queen Jacqueline II, Jimmy and Jackie Bastow. Then it was time to meet our 2013 Royalty! Krewe President and Captain 2012-2013 Jimmy Bastow was presented to the guests.
