WHAT IS IT about Jeremy Jordan? Tickets for this Broadway sensation’s Center Cabaret debut have been flying out of the box office. Jordan will be in Samueli Theater February 22-26 for four performances, and one show is already sold out. The star, who is handsome enough to have starred in two Hallmark movies, will perform some of Broadway’s greatest hits, including shows he has been part of, as well as Rock of Ages, Carousel, Oklahoma and Les Misérables, to name a few. It will be a thrilling performance. Jordan first hit the big time when he showed off his sensational singing and dancing as the star of Disney’s Newsies, both the stage version and the film, and earned Tony and Grammy nominations for the role. Then he went to Hollywood and won plaudits for his television work in NBC’s Smash and CW’s Supergirl. He starred opposite Anna Kendricks in the film version of Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years and with Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah in Joyful Noise. He has just finished a new film, Spinning Gold, in which he stars as Neil Bogart, the founder of Casablanca Records in the 1970s. (Cue very curly wig and unbuttoned shirts for Jordan.) But it’s the stage that is his real love, and he has performed in many productions, including Waitress, Little Shop of Horrors (one of his favorite roles), Big River, a concert production of West Side Story at the Hollywood Bowl, and more. “I’ve always been a singer, I’ve always loved it,” Jordan told myentertainmentworld.com. “Theater and live performance are always … gratifying as an actor; there’s a special energy between the audience and the actor on stage that can’t be duplicated.” Today, we can add “he’s gone viral” with videos of him singing his heart out with songs— some more usually sung by women—such

as “She Used to Be Mine” from Waitress. Cue gazillions of online views. Last October Jordan starred in the world premiere of a musical version of The Great Gatsby, which opened at the renowned Paper Mill Playhouse. There is no definitive word yet if the production will move to Broadway or if Jordan will reprise his role as Gatsby. We hope he will sing one or two of the songs from it, and some other unexpected favorite tunes. Buy your tickets now before all the shows sell out. Kristin Hannah: a way with words

Photo: Kevin Lynch, Inc.

YOU MIGHT THINK that someone who has written more than 20 books would, at this point, have a shiny new laptop with all the bells and whistles on which to compose her work. Not Kristin Hannah. She still does most of her initial writing on a yellow legal notepad. Well, she was an attorney in a past career. Hannah will be the third writer in our In Conversation series. She will discuss her writing, including her most famous book, The Nightingale, her inspiration, and what writing means to her. The Q&A will be moderated by Sandra Tsing Loh. Hannah was in law school when her mother was diagnosed with advanced cancer. The pair decided to try writing a novel as something to pass the time they had together. Before she passed away, and despite Hannah’s legal studies, her mother told her she would become a writer. Hannah put that aside and practiced law until

some years later when she was put on bed rest during a pregnancy. She retrieved the notes and finished the story. Then she kept on writing. She didn’t know then whether this new career would pan out, but the baby who was born after that bed rest is now an adult with children of his own. She wrote 20 novels before The Nightingale hit the shelves. The Nightingale takes place in France during World War II and tells the story of women in the French Resistance, with the focus on two sisters. Released in 2015, it topped multiple best seller lists and sold more than 2 million copies worldwide. “It’s the book where I found my voice, my footing and my future,” Hannah told The New York Times. Hannah based her characters on real women who lived ordinary lives until World War II put them in situations where they risked everything to hide Jewish children or help allied airmen to escape. She wanted readers to ask themselves, “What would I do in a similar situation?” The book also gave wider attention to the stories that are seldom told of the real women when they were caught up in the war and often had to make unthinkable choices. Since the release of Nightingale, Hannah has written several more best-selling books. Now she returns to a war-torn topic in her newest novel, The Women, a story set in the 1960s. The novel follows the life of young nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath, whose traditional upbringing is upended by the Vietnam War, her decision to volunteer, and the bitter divisions the war creates in the U.S. As if you need more reasons to see this bestselling author, audience members will be the first people able to purchase The Women, one day before its published release! IT’S NOT UNUSUAL for a classical quartet to name itself after a major composer. But in the case of the Schumann Quartet, the name comes from three of the members—brothers with that last name. The group is rounded out by violist Veit Hertenstein, who recently joined the ensemble, and the four create a cohesive sound that audiences appreciate. Find out for yourself when the quartet comes to Samueli Theater February 16. Erik, Ken—violins—and Mark—cello—have been playing together since they were children. They each have their own musical personalities, but the group finds common ground when they play together. “The ensemble’s communication with each other was striking,” says the washingtonclassicalreview.com. “Each member seemed carefully attuned to one another, responding to the slightest change in dynamic or character.” The Strad praises the quartet’s “brightly ringing, luminous and finely finessed sound.” The program at the Center will comprise of String Quartet in A Major, K464 by Mozart; JanáČek’s Quartet No. 1 “Kreuzter Sonata”; and String Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 127 by Beethoven. The JanáČek is a contrast to the other pieces, a mature work composed when JanáČek was in the latter years of his life. Choosing this piece for the program allows the Schumann to show their mastery of different eras of music, and a different aspect to the two earlier composers. “A work really develops only in a live performance,” the quartet says. “That is ‘the real thing’ because we ourselves never know what will happen. The Lion King: from screen to stage HOW COULD the original animated film of The Lion King be brought to life by human performers on stage? Along with his coproducer Peter Schneider, Thomas Schumacher, president of Disney Theatrical Productions, knew that the only way to make The Lion King work on stage was to re-imagine the story in a completely theatrical way. After all, the 1994 animated film, which had gone on to become one of Disney’s most popular movies and a worldwide phenomenon, featured lions and dozens of other African animals as characters. Who could take on the seemingly impossible task of bring The Lion King to life on stage? During the 1980s, Schumacher had come in contact with Julie Taymor, an avant-garde director whose innovative, sometimes largerthan-life puppetry and breathtaking staging had taken the theatrical world by storm. Once Taymor agreed to direct the project, the artistic vision fell into place. Once Simba’s story was adapted for stage, Taymor worked with the film’s co-director Roger Allers and screenwriter Irene Mecchi to tackle the problem of creating animal characters

from human performers. “Julie’s idea was very different,” says Schumacher, “because she said that although this is a story told with animals, it’s a human tale. And so to do that she wanted humans revealed at all times. Whether you play a principal character, whether you play an ensemble person who is an animal or a plant, you always see the person [actor].” Taymor was determined to emphasize the “theatrical” in the stage version of The Lion King. In a film, special effects are like secret magic tricks; audiences gasp and say, “How did they do that?” In The Lion King, Taymor wanted to reveal the HOW, and show the human being behind every character and effect. The ropes, the pulleys and wires that create the magic in The Lion King are seen by the audience; the human beings that portray the animal characters are clearly seen beneath the costumes and masks. When special effects are hidden, the audience is passive, but by revealing the inner workings of its magic, The Lion King asks the audience members to actively use their imaginations to “fill in the blanks.”

Bringing the music to life The Lion King’s musical score reflects the influence of both western popular music and African rhythms. Merging the two musical worlds of Broadway and South Africa, the composers take us from the playful upbeat melodies of “Hakuna Matata” to the somber and mournful “Shadowlands” to the tribal celebration of “One by One.” The Lion King film featured five songs by Sir Elton John and Sir Tim Rice: “Circle of Life,” “I Just Can’t Wait to be King,” “Be Prepared,” “Hakuna Matata,” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight.” Before The Lion King, both John and Rice had enjoyed rewarding solo careers: Rice in partnership with Andrew Lloyd Webber on such shows as Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita, John with such pop music hits as “Benny and the Jets” and “Philadelphia Freedom.” Their reputations as celebrated icons in the music industry were once again rewarded when the duo won the Grammy in 1998 for Best Show Album for The Lion King. In films, music can be pivotal or simply compliment the action, but in musical theatre, songs are used to give insights into the characters and move the story forward. When work began on bringing The Lion King to the stage, the creative team felt that a full musical would need additional songs and more music to tell Simba’s story.

After the film debuted, Disney released Rhythm of the Pridelands, a concept album by Hans Zimmer, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin and South African musician Lebo M, which combined the film’s themes with African rhythms and music. Many of the songs and choruses from this evocative album were adapted into new songs for the stage version of The Lion King. Along with their original songs from the film, Rice and John wrote three new songs for the stage play that contributed to the storytelling: “The Morning Report,” “Chow Down” and “The Madness of King Scar.” For Lebo M, The Lion King story had personal resonance. During the 1990s, South Africa destroyed its inhumane apartheid practice of racial segregation and witnessed a new dawning of equality. He said, “Most of the music I wrote, and the lyrics and arrangements, are very much inspired by my life story and my background as a South African artist.” The Lion King score is a unique blending of music from many different sources. As Mancina says, “There are no boundaries … the music for The Lion King is diverse. It is African and it’s pop and it’s incredibly emotional.” Yet it all works together to tell the story and give us insights into the characters’ thoughts and emotions. © Disney Theatrical Productions Education Department

The art of hospitality WHEN AN American Ballet Theatre dancer needs to rest her toes after a performance at Segerstrom Center, where does she go? She and the rest of the company stay at Avenue of the Arts Costa Mesa, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel. Located across the street from the theater, it is the only AAA Four Diamond hotel in Costa Mesa. This close proximity is part of what draws Center stars to this location. Visiting artists have included Cyndi Lauper, Steve Martin, Kristin Chenoweth, and the aforementioned dance company, and since artist contracts usually request accommodation close to our venue, Avenue of the Arts Hotel meets that need perfectly. The hotel’s Silver Trumpet Restaurant and Bar is available for them—and our patrons—with a lake view and theater-inspired cuisine. It is also a popular spot for pre-or postperformance cocktails and a bite to eat. The hotel is an important partner of the Center and takes pride in sponsoring education programs and initiatives at the Center. “We want to promote community dialogue and artistic expression through the arts,” says Paul Sanford, CEO & Asset Manager of Wincome Hospitality, which manages the hotel. “We are active in working with the Center to support its innovative programming and diverse education projects.” In 2022, the hotel unveiled an extraordinary mural in its lobby created by three classrooms of 5th graders at Taft Elementary School in Santa Ana as part of the Center’s Arts Connect program. The visual arts workshop was led by teaching artist Marcus Tracy and together they created a colorful mural celebrating individuality while working collaboratively. The project was supported by the hotel. “At the Center we know that when our community partners work together with us on arts projects, the positive outcomes are multiplied by the powerful energy created

Dancers from American Ballet Theatre stayed at Avenue of the Arts Hotel when they partnered with the Center to present their dance project, Uniting in Movement

through collaborations,” says Talena Mara, vice president of education. “What an honor it was to work with Avenue of the Arts Hotel to create and implement this imaginative project that benefits everyone in such extraordinary ways.” This is by no means the only arts project Avenue of the Arts Hotel has helped the Center accomplish. In 2021 during the pandemic it supported the Center and American Ballet Theatre’s Uniting in Movement project. The hotel created a quarantine “bubble” by providing 42 hotel rooms for choreographers, dancers and artistic staff. During the five-week residency, they rehearsed a new program of works. With a tight quarantine around the Center, final performances in Segerstrom Hall were recorded and available to be enjoyed on demand. Avenue of the Arts Hotel also sponsors some of our Broadway Series productions, including Hamilton in 2022. This season it’s proud to lend underwriting support to Disney’s The Lion King, making its fourth triumphant return to the Center. The uniquely theatrical storytelling of this Broadway spectacular makes it one of the most breathtaking and beloved productions ever to grace the stage, and one that our patrons want to see over and over. “While the Avenue of the Arts Hotel can offer unparalleled accommodation and service to our guests, we are also honored to be able to assist our neighbor,” says Kevin Schjei, general manager of the Avenue of the Arts Hotel. “There is a spirit of cooperation and respect for the arts that we both can appreciate.”

FOR CHILDREN TO GROW into world-class dancers, they need teachers who have the knowledge to correctly guide them through each level of study and mitigate injury and incorrect practices. At the American Ballet Theatre Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis school in New York City and the American Ballet Theatre William J. Gillespie School at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, teachers are trained in the company’s own National Training Curriculum. Those who pass can then call themselves ABT Certified Teachers, which demonstrates that they have learned best practices of how to teach ballet. But it doesn’t stop there: ABT teachers keep learning throughout their careers. In Teacher Training Intensive courses, teachers continue to receive a holistic education on the National Training Curriculum and best practices, covering the latest ideas in health and movement as well as tried-and-tested methods. It’s a highintensity refresher course that keeps their teaching up to date. A Teacher Training Intensive for preprimary through Level 3 classes will be held April 6 through 14 at the ABT Gillespie School at Segerstrom Center. The deadline for applications is Wednesday, February 7. The Teacher Training Intensive is a nine-day course that emphasizes training instructors in how to teach dance students to use their bodies correctly by focusing on kinetics, coordination, anatomy, and proper body alignment. This is imperative in the beginning levels so that students start strengthening the muscles they will use to dance at higher levels. Taking the intensive is a test of stamina by itself. The days are spent in a combination of lectures, classes, observations, with opportunities for feedback on exercises from your peers. Evenings are spent reviewing previous lessons and studying in order to be

ready for the final certification examinations. Candidates take written and oral exams to demonstrate whether they can correctly demonstrate positions and communicate corrections. Teachers can later become certified in Levels 4 & 5, and then take an intensive course for Levels 6, 7, & Partnering. The Intensive augments ABT’s National Training Curriculum, the company’s program for the development and training of students that embraces sound ballet principles and incorporates elements of the French, Italian, and Russian schools of training. It provides teachers with the information needed to fully understand the best practices in pedagogy, child development, dance psychology, and anatomy. Artistically, the curriculum strives to provide dance students with a rich knowledge of classical ballet technique and the ability to adapt to all styles and techniques of dance. Dino-Light is dino-mite! IS IT FAIR to give away the secret of Lightwire Theater’s breathtaking puppets? Even if audiences know how it’s created, they are quickly drawn in and forget that it’s special wiring powered by AA batteries. The company returns to the Family Series with Dino-Light. In this original story, a famous scientist with magic powers brings a friendly small dinosaur to life. The dinosaur wanders away from home and discovers a wonderful world full of creatures that light up the darkness and help him find the true meaning of love. But there also are dangers along the way and the dino must learn some lessons before he finds his way back to the friendly scientist. The production looks like it has been produced with highly scientific elements, but it’s surprisingly ordinary. Many conventional items are used to create the costumes, including fishing rods, skateboard wheels, election signs, dryer ducting and lots of duct tape. The actors wear black suits and masks with electroluminescent wire to outline the character. It really is powered by ordinary AA batteries, which allows a 360-degree aspect of the character without theatrical lighting. The

shows are presented in total darkness that gives audiences a complete immersive experience. Dino-Light was the recipient of the prestigious Jim Henson Foundation Grant and was the first feature-length theatrical production created and performed by Lightwire Theater. This glow-in-the-dark adventure is visually stunning and has been praised for its cutting-edge blend of puppetry, technology, and dance by audiences all over the world. “It is hard not to smile watching Lightwire’s dancers … who bring to life tales of colorful creatures for children and adults alike,” says New Orleans magazine, while AXS.com says “Children’s theater should be based around a good story that is presented magically and visually stunning. The performances from the Lightwire Theater Company fit that bill.” You won’t want to miss the show that Rolling Stone calls “Absolutely incredible.” SAMUELI THEATER February 3–4 | Tickets start at $20

LEAVE CANCER TO THE CANCER EXPERTS When it comes to cancer, there’s a lifesaving difference with cancer-focused expertise. Successfully treating this complex disease comes with decades of singular, unwavering focus. So, while our region is rich with excellent options for addressing community health, nobody in Orange County researches, treats and cures cancer—and only cancer—like City of Hope.
